Deciding About Breast Implants: An Emotional Journey

plastic surgeon PhoenixMost women who get breast implants are realistic about the surgery. For them, it's a body image issue; according to a top plastic surgeon Phoenix patients come in who are often simply not happy with their bodies and wish to improve them. They have realistic expectations that if this is done, they will look more satisfying to their own eye and to others. But their self-esteem does not depend on it. However, the journey to the operating table can be emotionally painful for some. One study showed that in the year before their breast augmentation Phoenix women reported greater distress about their appearance and more teasing about it. They also spent more time in a psychiatrist's office than women who didn't get the surgery.

Over the years many Phoenix plastic surgeons have come to recognize the patient with unrealistic expectations. They say that they won't treat patients who are going through major life changes - divorce, death in the family, according to WebMD. Patients are told up front it won't change their life, won't get them a new job, won't get them more dates, but it can make them feel better about who they are.

When self-esteem and sense of self are more fragile, that's when people tend to have unrealistic expectations of breast implant plastic surgery Phoenix surgeons explain. They are seeking transformation of sense of self. The gap between their ideal self and real self -- or the way they see themselves - is greater than for the other group.

Studies have certainly shown high levels of satisfaction and improved quality of life after getting breast implants or a tummy tuck Phoenix surgeons tell us. But a decade later, the satisfaction fades for some reason in some cases. Experts do not know for sure what the reasons are. Bottom line: Good surgeons must help women assess whether their expectations and reasons for wanting breast implant surgery are realistic.

Reconstructive Plastic Surgery For People Suffering From Injury And Obesity

Phoenix Breast Augmentation

For patients who have more complex needs beyond wanting to look younger, reconstructive surgery is a necessity. The Spectrum and Daily News writes that when we think of plastic surgery in major US cities like Phoenix breast augmentation, tummy tuck or other elective kinds of procedures likely come to mind; it’s important to note cosmetic surgery’s other beneficial functions especially in facial and body reconstruction.

The need for reconstructive surgery in busy metropolitan cities where anyone can slip and fall at the office, get into an accident, or sustain injury while playing a sport is especially evident. In Phoenix liposuction and other aesthetics-enhancing cosmetic procedures go much further in improving the quality of life for individuals suffering from both normal and morbid obesity. Patients who may or may not have sustained trauma injury from car or other accidents that can cause broken or shattered bones in the face, torso, or limbs can also benefit tremendously from reconstructive surgery.

A specialist in Phoenix plastic surgery recently informs us that falls (at work, home, or on the street) are the most common cause of soft tissue injury to the face for many of his facial surgery patients. He advises that seat belts and air bags are one way to help prevent or minimize this type of facial trauma since they can keep the face from hitting the steering wheel or dashboard in the event of an accident. Mouth pieces worn while participating in some types of sports can help minimize damage to the teeth. Helmets can help protect the face to some degree when riding bikes, motorcycles or when rollerblading. Please contact your local Phoenix plastic surgeon for additional information on reconstructive cosmetic surgery of the face or body.

FRAXEL RE:PAIR – BENEFITS AND OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

With increasing demand for non-invasive ways to reduce wrinkles or other unsightly facial problems, researchers and surgeons continue to research cutting edge plastic surgery to develop and laser treatments that bring reduced risk and quick healing.  The Walton Sun recently reports the introduction of Fraxel Re:pair, a non-invasive laser treatment used for the reduction of fine to moderate wrinkles on the face, neck and chest.

Surgeon Dr. Steve Weiner, MD of Aesthetic Clinque conducted a one-year study with Solta Medical Inc., and his results were presented at the annual American Academy for Dermatology meeting.  The study will also be published by Solta Medical Inc.

After speaking with experts, we’ve found that Phoenix cosmetic surgeons along with surgeons across the country recognize the potential benefits of face-lift like procedures such as the Fraxel Re:pair treatment which is based on CO2 laser technology.  This is how it generally works: the laser removes portions the epidermis and heats the dermis to tighten the skin and help with collagen elasticity, referred to as resurfacing.  As with other laser treatment the new skin is exposed and wound care, the most difficult part of the treatment, is necessary.  Many plastic surgeons, Phoenix liposuction specialists in particular, would agree that the latter healing stage of any cosmetic procedure is highly critical for successful results.

Certain groups are discouraged from receiving this treatment: smokers, people with excessively tanned skin and deeply dark skin.  People who smoke can inhibit the healing process since nicotine constricts blood vessels.  And Fraxel Re:pair doesn’t do as well on those with heightened pigmentation; the higher the pigmentation, the less effective the treatment is.  The treatment has been shown effective on Asians and Hispanics, however.  The cost for Fraxel Re:pair ranges from $1,300 to $6,300.

Fraxel Re:pair is strictly a low-intensive, non-evasive facial procedure not designed for treating extensively loose facial skin.  Generally, individuals who seek fine facial line removal and treatment of acne scars can benefit from this procedure, however, patients who need more aggressive, long-lasting facial treatments are highly recommended to consider more traditional methods which have been proven effective time and time again.  As patient needs differ from individual to individual, specialists in the industry encourage clients to carefully consider all options before choosing the appropriate procedure.  Whether considering Fraxel Re:pair or other types of cosmetic treatments, patients in the Arizona area interested in traditional face lift or aesthetic Phoenix breast augmentation surgery should refer to plastic surgery professionals in their areas.

Plastic Surgery for At-Risk Breast Cancer Patients

An article appearing in the January/February issue of the Aesthetic Surgery Journal suggests that patients considering elective breast surgery would gain ultimately improved results after being assessed for breast cancer risk. The article also provides guidelines for plastic surgeons to help women determine breast cancer risk, as well as the most successful options for surgical intervention and breast reconstruction.

There are many risk factors associated with breast cancer, family history probably being the most prevalent. Although these risk factors don’t always mean any woman can or cannot get diagnosed with breast cancer. Estimates predict one out of every eight women will develop breast cancer at some point in her lifetime. That is why it is so important to have regular screenings, either using MRI or mammography to detect the presence of breast cancer, and even genetic testing to determine the risk of developing breast cancer in the future.

“Genetic testing, such as that for BRCA1 and BRCA2 (genes associated with breast cancer), has allowed clinicians to better tailor risk management strategies in patients from families with hereditary breast cancer,” said Hooman Soltanian, MD, lead author of the piece. “Plastic surgeons are in a unique position to provide early preventative options to their patients.”

In Phoenix cosmetic surgeon Dr. Geoffrey Leber, who is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and board certified for the American Board of Plastic Surgery also stresses the importance of breast implant safety education especially amongst those at risk for breast cancer.

Early intervention with particularly high risk women can mean they can choose from more surgical and reconstructive procedures. Also, reconstructive surgery and aesthetic plastic surgery of the breasts, such as Phoenix breast lift surgery (Mastopexy) if done at the same time, can also optimize the cosmetic results.

Even for women simply seeking aesthetic breast surgery, Phoenix breast implants specialist Dr. Leber says that determining breast cancer risk sooner rather than later can help in choosing the best course of action, and ultimately achieve the best possible results.

Plastic surgery Phoenix patients of Dr. Leber always get a fully informational consultation, in which he discusses the medical risks, care, and technology associated with the procedure in question. The ASAPS suggests the following guidelines for aesthetic breast surgery patients who are at a higher risk for breast cancer:

  • Prior to every elective breast surgery, special attention should be paid to any family history of breast or ovarian cancer.
  • Patients who are at high risk for breast cancer based on their personal and family history should be referred for further evaluation by a medical oncologist and/or geneticist.
  • Every woman 40 years of age and older should have a mammogram prior to an elective breast procedure. Some even recommend a preoperative mammogram in all women undergoing cosmetic breast surgery.
  • It is important to note that breast augmentation, reduction, mastopexy (breast lift) and implants may have significant consequences in screening and surveillance of breast cancer, specifically with regard to future mammographic evaluation. A new mammogram should be obtained three-to-six months after surgery, to serve as the new baseline for evaluation.
  • Ultrasound studies and MRI may be used to further evaluate patients with difficult or unsatisfactory mammograms.

Looking Younger with Facial Rejuvenation in Phoenix

Facial rejuvenation in Phoenix, and beyond, has progressed way past traditional facelift surgery. Not just for aging baby boomers anymore, facial rejuvenation now includes even younger patients, battling the earliest stages of the aging process. Many people think the industry is hottest in Beverly Hills and Los Angeles, where the pressure of looking young and keeping up with the Joneses is most prevalent, but in fact, Phoenix is surging with cosmetic surgery patients, and here, technical advances are moving the plastic surgery industry forward.

Phoenix plastic surgery helps turn back the clock. With procedures such as facelifts, browlifts, mini-facelifts, neck lifts, facial implants, chemical peels, Botox, and Phoenix eyelid surgery, facial signs of aging like wrinkles, sagging skin and age spots are eliminated, leaving smoother, younger looking skin.

A Phoenix facelift, or rhytidectomy, will take care of elevating cheeks, lifting jawlines, tightening the skin around the brow and temples, and raising the eyelids, depending on the individual’s facial structure and expectations. A facelift is still often the longest-lasting and most successful procedure for a more dramatically youthful appearance. However, there are alternatives to facelift surgery which are less invasive and with minimal downtime.

Doctors say that of all tell-tale signs of aging above the collarbone, most often the neck demonstrate the first. The main reason is that the neck skin - thinner and less elastic than that of the face - succumbs earliest to the forces of gravity. Among the earliest signs of aging are, in fact, some jowls and the "double chin". Here is where a neck lift procedure, often performed in conjunction with Phoenix neck liposuction, steps in to remove the effect of wrinkles, fat tissues and other symptoms of aging in the neck area, which are often overlooked.

Another procedure often disregarded for facial rejuvenation, is nose surgery, also known as rhinoplasty. While the nose may not be the first thing you attribute to aging, a rhinoplasty procedure is often the most dramatic in overall aesthetics of the face. Often Phoenix rhinoplasty
patients who have undergone nasal surgery for removing bumps, or drooping tips, comment on how much younger and refreshed they look, simply by changing the appearance of their nose.

Body Contouring Risks for Overweight Patients

A recent study from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) shows that body contouring procedures carry higher risk of complications among patients with a higher Body Mass Index (BMI). A number of patients who had undergone body contouring procedures, for example Phoenix liposuction, tummy tuck, and body lift surgeries were grouped into 5 weight categories: ideal (BMI <25), overweight (BMI 25 – 30), obese (BMI 31-35), morbidly obese (BMI 36-40), and severely morbidly obese (BMI >41). Research found that the number of minor or major complications which occurred increased per weight group fairly drastically. Minor complications increased from 3.3% in the ideal weight group to 46.9% in the severely morbidly obese group; major complications increased from 6.6% in the ideal weight group to 43.7% in the severely morbidly obese group.

The ASAPS published the findings of this study in the July/August 2008 issue of the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, and used this information to urge both patients and plastic surgeons to be wary of these risks. ASAPS members like Phoenix plastic surgeon Dr. Geoffrey Leber also suggest that these findings be put into use in a way that create better medical guidelines in evaluating patients, helping to ensure the utmost safety for Phoenix cosmetic surgery patients as well as throughout the U.S.

Still body contouring procedures like Phoenix breast lift, thigh lift, arm lift, and buttock lifts are some of the most popular. According to ASAPS statistics, 368,313 body contouring procedures were performed in 2007.

Recent Statistics Show Face and Chest Most Popular Sites for Plastic Surgery

According to statistics released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the year 2007 showed that the most common plastic surgery procedures, for both men and women, were those of the face and chest.
Nationwide facial procedures like the Phoenix facelift increased 14% for women and 16 percent for men from 2006. Similarly, chest procedures like Phoenix breast augmentation for women increased 6% and pectoral implants for men increased 8%. Further, reconstructive breast reduction for women increased 2%, which is a significant difference from the 9% decrease reported last year. Male breast reduction increased 7%.
ASPS President Richard A. D’Amico, MD said that “while 91% of plastic surgery procedures are performed on women and 9% are performed on men, it is interesting to see the rate of increase is comparable in both.”
Further, non surgical cosmetic procedures for the face increased considerably for both women and men. Radiesse™ increased 123% for women and 134% for men, laser skin resurfacing increased 32% for both women and men, Restylane®, Hylaform®, Hylaform Plus® and Juvederm™ increased 35% for women and 24%, and Botox® increased 14% for women and 4% for men.
Board-certified Phoenix plastic surgeon Dr. Geoffrey Leber is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons who completed his aesthetic plastic surgery fellowship in Beverly Hills, California, takes part in collecting statistics through his Phoenix cosmetic surgery practice. ASPS procedural statistics are gathered through the first online national database for plastic surgery procedures, Tracking Operations and Outcomes for Plastic Surgeons (TOPS). This data, combined with the annual survey sent to American Board of Medical Specialties certified physicians most likely to perform plastic surgery, results in the most comprehensive census on plastic surgery procedures.
